Pu-erh is made from extra large leaves plucked from long-lived tea bushes, which are plentiful in Yunnan Province. Pu-erh tea is different from other teas. Other teas such as white, green or red teas, tend to lose their freshness and flavor soon after the time of production, Pu-erh, due to qualities inherent in its broad leaves, undergoes a fermentation process which improves its taste, texture and aroma over time. Health benefits of Puer tea:

Dr. Oz mentioned this tea as a weight loss tea (remedy) which helps shrink fat cells and he suggests it to take in the morning for maximum benefits.

Since 1970 France, Japan and China have been conducting many scientific studies on Pu’Er tea which suggest that it may have many health benefits including powerful cholesterol lowering effects, blood cleansing properties and significant aid in weight loss efforts.

Puer tea goes through a special fermentation process that makes it very beneficial to the digestive system, or Spleen.

It reduces bad cholesterol and lowers triglycerides. In one study in laboratory animals, puer tea was the only kind of tea which could actually raise the level of good cholesterol (HDL) and lower the level of bad cholesterol (LDL.) Another study revealed that drinking Pu'erh on a regular basis could significantly lower cholesterol and further research confirmed that Pu'erh was as effective as the most advanced cholesterol lowering medications available.

It may reduce blood sugar levels significantly and help prevent diabetes. Puer tea may reduces arteriosclerosis, reduces plaque in the heart, helps to prevent strokes. It is a source of antioxidants which helps fight cancer and promote cell health.

Interesting facts about peur tea:

  • Pu'erh gets its name from a town in the southwestern province of the Yunnan region, and though tea is not grown in this town, it was at one time a thriving tea market.
  • Because of the inherent qualities of these leaves, the tea does not lose its flavor with time like other teas.
  • Pu-erh tea's taste improves with each passing year, becoming more flavorful, more complex and more mellow. It is perhaps because of this singular feature, the capacity to improve with age, that Pu-erh is also called "a drinkable antique."
  • Pu’er tea over the centuries has been used as a form of currency in China and an important international trading item.
  • Pu-erh is a "post-fermented" tea. It starts its life out with features of a green tea. But over time, the fermentation process transforms it into a black tea.
  • Pu-erh is categorized into ten grades, 1-10. The lower the number, the better the overall quality of the leaves.
  • One of the unique features of Pu-erh tea is its distinct packaging and the various shapes into which it is compressed.  Unlike all other teas, Pu-erh tea can be in loose-leaf form or pressed into a cake, brick or other shape. The most common shape of Pu-erh tea is the round cake (Beeng Cha). Traditionally, each cake weighs 357g, although the cakes manufactured in recent years have also come in larger or smaller sizes.
  • Although all teas are believed to be capable of lowering blood sugar levels, Pu'er and oolong are thought to be the most effective. In fact, they sometimes lower blood sugar level so fast that some people feel weak in the limbs, experience a faster heartbeat and even feel dizzy - all signs of too low a blood sugar level.
  • Pu-erh's taste improves with age. As a wedding gift, it is an heirloom that can be saved and savored on that special 30th anniversary, even as it, all the while, increases in value. Or it may be given as a birthday present that can be opened and sampled every year to appreciate the flavor changes that it undergoes. Different, yet meaningful, Pu-erh can make a very memorable gift.
  • Pu-erh tea can be consumed by itself or mixed with flower teas, such as rose, osmanthus, or chrysanthemum. Flowers add a nice floral aroma and taste that makes the tea more interesting and enjoyable. Goji berries, high in antioxidants, may also be added to serve as a natural sweetener. In warmer weather, clients have reported that cool Pu-erh can be very pleasant and refreshing.

Pu-erh is sold in loose leaf or compressed form.. The cake or brick packing of pu erh tea is the most popular form.
