Cardiac Arrhythmia

Symptoms do not always develop; but, if they do, their onset is usually sudden and may include palpitations (irregular heartbeats). Other symptoms include light-headedness, sometimes leading to loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, pain in the chest or neck. Stroke and heart failure are possible complications.

Causes - These are abnormal rates in the rhythm of the heartbeat. In the more common palpitations, the heart occasionally seems to skip a beat or two. They are often minor and self-correcting. But cardiac arrhythmia is not. They generally do not normalize by themselves; and they can lead to a potentially fatal heart attack. Arrhythmia usually occurs in people over 50. The following suggestions are for arrhythmia. But you might have a different type of heart problem.

Natural Remedies

Hawthorn helps prevent heart problems by gently strengthening the heart muscle, improving blood circulation through the heart, and reducing the heart's need for oxygen. It also helps the heart circulate blood with less effort. It is best to take standardized extracts. If the extract is standardized to 18 percent OPCs, the recommended dosage is 240-480 mg once a day.

Coenzyme Q10 is normally found in the body, where it helps manufacture energy. It can help stabilize the body's electrical system, thus helping to prevent arrhythmia. It is especially effective in preventing premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), which feel like skipped heartbeats. Those with this problem should take 120-240 mg daily.

Taurine is an amino acid which can help stop your nerves from over-stimulating your heart. This is necessary in order to control heart arrhythmia.

Magnesium is the mineral which relaxes your heart. Too little magnesium jangles the electricity that controls muscles and nerves, possibly leading to arrhythmia. Taking enough can help keep the electricity stable and your heart calm. For mild arryhthmia, take 250 mg, 4 times daily, or 500 mg twice a day with food. Continue taking this for about 2 months; then lower the dose to 500-800 mg a day.

Angelica contains at least 14 anti-arrhythmic compounds. You can blend it with raw vegetables, garlic, some water, and a little honey to improve the taste.

Astragalus is an immune stimulant; and barberry is an herbal antibiotic. Both are also heart tonics that help prevent and treat arryhythma.

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca), as its scientific name indicates, helps heart problems. The Chinese discovered that it slows a rapid heartbeat, improving cardiac activity. It also calms the nervous system.

Valerian has been used for arrhythmia and palpitations as far back as Roman times. It also lowers blood pressure, increases blood flow to the heart, and improves its pumping action.

Sometimes the problem is over-stimulated adrenal glands. When you are stressed, these glands pump out hormones that can irritate and over-stimulate your heart so that it races or flutters. Make fists of your hands; put your fists behind the small of your back (on either side of your spine), and then gently rub your hands up and down. Do these 2-3 minutes daily.
