When your tooth hurts or your kid complains about toothache, you cannot ignore it. Sometimes toothache seems like a sledgehammer slamming into your jaw, over and over. May be at this stage you would look for a pain killer or consult your dentist.

How about trying a therapy which helps you get relief from toothache effectively, which has no side effects and is free of cost?

Acupressure therapy is that miraculous toothache-relieving technique which can be adopted anytime, anywhere it happen to be.

Causes of toothache: A common cause of toothache could originate from a number sources, but mainly from any of the following: dental cavities, gum disease, tooth root sensitivities, cracked tooth syndrome, impaction and eruption.

Acupressure point to get relief from toothache:

'Acupressure Online' suggest 3 effective acupressure points which are LI 4, ST 6, and ST 3 but I have found more acupoints at other sites which you can study by going to 'useful links' section.

1- Large Intestines 4: Acupressure specialists call this the "Joining the Valley point,"  it lies on the Large Intestine Meridian.

Use the thumb and index finger to press firmly on the webbing between the thumb and index finger of the hand.

Caution: Pregnant women should not use this point. This point is forbidden for pregnant women.

Location: between thumb and index finger as indicated on the picture.

Direction: apply firm deep strokes of pressure in upward direction. The initial painful sensation will soon begin to subside. Do it with the left hand side also for same duration.

2- St6 - Start with a less painful side. Location: on the muscle that bulges the teeth are clenched.

Direction: apply firm deep strokes of pressure into the jaw. The initial painful sensation will soon begin to subside.

Duration: 1 min

3- St 3:  Location: below the cheekbone, directly down from the pupil of the eye.

Direction: apply firm deep strokes of pressure in upward direction against the bottom edge of the cheekbone. The initial painful sensation will soon begin to subside. Duration: 1 min

Tips:

  • Usually acupressure points are more sensitive than surrounding area.
  • You do not need to massage all active points included in the exercise. Some active points produce stronger effect than others. You may choose to limit the exercise to massaging these high potency points only.
  • Apply massage for two or three times a day.

More suggested points to get relief from toothace:

You need to apply pressure on corresponding finger according to the effected tooth. (As shown in the figure)

Give the treatment on that fingertip In the case of severe pain, press this tip of the finger continuously for more than 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the pressure when the finger starts getting blue. Then treatment can be continued again, later on, if necessary. It could be due to cavity. So see your dentist at the earliest.
